Albany Attorney Michael Kessler Spoke at International Birth Injury Litigation Conference in Europe

Kessler, a partner at Rosenblum, Ronan, Kessler and Sarachan in Albany, New York, spoke at an international legal conference on children with birth injuries. The conference occurred on October 14 and 15 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It was jointly sponsored by the Pan European Organization of European Lawyers and the Birth Trauma Litigation Group of the American Association for Justice.

The conference was held to educate attorneys how to better protect the legal rights of children who have suffered injury as the result of obstetric malpractice. It featured renowned physicians and attorneys from across Europe and the United States as speakers.

On October 14, Mr. Kessler addressed the conference on his topic, "Using Actuarial Concepts to Determine Economic Loss in Catastrophic Birth Injury Cases." Mr. Kessler is a nationally recognized expert on life expectancy in personal injury litigation. In addition to this recent European presentation, Mr. Kessler has previously been invited to speak on this issue at many national legal conferences in the United States including the American Association for Justice and The North American Brain Injury Society, as well as internationally in Canada and in Australia to the Australian Lawyer's Alliance and the Queensland Law Society. He has also published a book chapter on this subject.

The cost of future care is often the largest component of damages for a catastrophically injured child. Therefore, an accurate determination of a plaintiff's life expectancy is vital to assure appropriate compensation. Mr. Kessler discussed actuarial principles, use of life expectancy literature, mortality tables, and techniques to effectively present life expectancy information to judges and juries.
